Real Conservation Fieldwork in Nusa Penida

Conservation is not an add-on to this internship. It is part of the weekly structure of the program.

As a Conservation Divemaster intern, you participate in Project Laut’s ongoing field projects, including coral reef restoration, sea turtle photo-identification, reef monitoring, fish surveys, and marine ecology training. The goal is to build practical conservation skills while developing into a more capable and environmentally aware dive professional.

Hands-on Coral Reef Restoration

Work on active reef restoration sites around Nusa Penida through coral attachment, maintenance, monitoring, and reef health observations.

Project Laut’s coral restoration work is part of an ongoing effort to support damaged reef areas around Nusa Penida through practical, site-based restoration and monitoring.

As an intern, you may take part in coral fragment preparation, attachment methods, restoration structure maintenance, basic reef health observations, and long-term monitoring of restoration sites. You will also learn how coral restoration fits into the wider reef ecosystem, including site selection, coral survival, maintenance challenges, and why restoration should always be connected to broader reef protection.

Our coral restoration work is developed in partnership with GoOcean, a Belgian conservation organization supporting reef restoration and ocean conservation projects. You can learn more about their work at GoOcean.be.

REEF.org Roving Fish Surveys

Build real fish identification and active fish survey skills while contributing citizen-science data through REEF.org roving diver surveys.

Project Laut is an official REEF.org Conservation Field Station, giving interns the opportunity to contribute to citizen-science reef fish monitoring while improving their own fish identification and survey skills.

As an intern, you will learn how to recognize local reef fish species, record observations underwater, and conduct roving diver surveys using REEF.org survey methods. These surveys help build long-term data on fish presence, abundance, and reef biodiversity.

Fish identification is also one of the most useful skills for any conservation-minded dive professional. It improves your awareness underwater, helps you understand reef ecology more clearly, and gives you practical tools for participating in reef monitoring projects anywhere in the world.

Sea Turtle Identification

Contribute to long-term turtle monitoring by photographing, identifying, and logging turtles using non-invasive photo-ID methods.

Nusa Penida is home to a strong population of resident and visiting sea turtles, making it an important area for long-term turtle monitoring.

As an intern, you will learn how to photograph turtles responsibly, identify individuals using facial scale patterns, log sightings, and contribute to Project Laut’s turtle identification database. This method is non-invasive, meaning turtles can be studied without tagging, handling, or disturbing them.

Over time, turtle photo-ID helps build a clearer picture of individual turtle movements, site fidelity, repeated sightings, and local population patterns around Nusa Penida. It also gives interns practical experience with wildlife monitoring, data collection, and responsible underwater observation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the Conservation Divemaster in Nusa Penida?

Project Laut’s Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali program is built around a strong core package, with the exact route depending on your current certification level when you join. At the center of the program is Divemaster training combined with ecology education, active conservation participation, and a large amount of in-water development over time.

The core package includes professional-level training, regular diving, ecology certifications, workshops, and active participation in Project Laut’s daily conservation work. Depending on your entry route, the program can also include the prerequisite certifications needed before beginning Divemaster training, such as Open Water, Advanced Open Water, React Right, and Stress & Rescue.

Across the program, candidates also take part in conservation-focused activities such as coral reef restoration, fish surveys with REEF.org, and sea turtle identification. The result is a Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali pathway that goes far beyond a standard certification and is designed to build both professional dive ability and real ecological understanding.

Can I join the Conservation SSI Divemaster Course in Bali program if I am only Open Water or Advanced certified?

Yes. One of the strengths of Project Laut’s SSI Divemaster Course in Bali program is that candidates can start from different levels of experience. You do not need to arrive already rescue certified or already on the edge of professional training in order to join.

We offer clear entry routes for divers starting from Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue, or even with no prior certification at all. The route simply changes depending on what you already have. If you begin from a lower certification level, the required prerequisites are built into the longer versions of the program so that you progress step by step into Divemaster training.

This makes the Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali pathway accessible to a wide range of candidates, while still preserving a strong professional standard by the time they complete the program.

How is this Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali different from a standard divemaster internship?

Project Laut’s Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali is different from a standard divemaster internship because the program is built around a dedicated model rather than being treated as a side product of a busy dive shop.

First, the internship is supported by dedicated staff who focus heavily on the training environment itself. Candidates are not simply learning on the fly around normal shop operations. Second, group sizes are small, which means candidates get more direct feedback, closer mentorship, and stronger day-to-day support.

Third, the training goes well beyond the minimum standard. We place major emphasis on academics, real understanding of the material, and in-water skill quality rather than just getting people through course requirements. Finally, the longer format creates more repetition, more dives, and more real-world experience than a typical short or loosely structured internship.

So while many divemaster internships are designed mainly to produce a certification, Project Laut’s Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali is designed to produce a much stronger diver and a more capable future professional.

How much conservation work is actually included in the Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali program?

Conservation is a real and active part of the Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali pathway, not just a label attached to the training. At Project Laut, conservation is integrated in two main ways.

The first is through formal ecology education. Candidates complete multiple SSI ecology specialties, which build structured understanding around coral systems, turtles, rays, sharks, reef fish, and restoration work. The second is through direct participation in Project Laut’s three core conservation pillars: coral reef restoration, REEF.org fish surveys, and sea turtle identification.

That means candidates are not just learning theory. They are also participating in active field-based work that connects directly to the ecology training. Over time, this makes the Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali pathway feel much more meaningful than a standard pro course with a few optional conservation-themed activities added on.

What ecology certifications are included in the SSI Divemaster in Bali pathway?

Project Laut’s SSI Divemaster Course in Bali program includes a strong ecology component built around formal SSI ecology certifications. These certifications are used to connect academic understanding with real field participation in Nusa Penida.

The ecology certifications included in the pathway are: SSI Sea Turtle Ecology, SSI Manta Ecology, SSI Coral Identification, SSI Fish Identification, SSI Shark Ecology, SSI Coral Reef Restoration, and SSI Marine Ecology Kit

Together, these certifications help give the Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali pathway much more depth than a standard divemaster program. Instead of only focusing on dive leadership and professional skills, candidates also leave with a much broader ecological foundation and a clearer understanding of the marine systems they are working in.

Will the Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali program prepare me well for Instructor Training later on?

Yes. Project Laut’s Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali program is designed to prepare candidates exceptionally well for later Instructor Training.

A major reason for this is the standard of the in-water training. Skills are taught and practiced neutrally buoyant, which gives candidates much stronger control, more consistent technique, and a better overall handle on the skill set than if they were simply trained to pass requirements at the surface or on the bottom. We also spend significant time on academics and teaching foundations, going well beyond the base course content so that candidates really understand what they are doing and why.

Because of that approach, many candidates leave the Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali program already in a very strong position to continue into Instructor Training with more confidence, better skill quality, and a stronger academic base.

What are the prerequisites for joining the Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali program?

The prerequisites for joining the Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali program depend on the route you are taking, but the overall structure is designed so that candidates can begin from almost any level.

If you already hold higher certifications, such as Advanced Open Water or Rescue, you can join through the shorter routes. If you have less experience, the longer routes include the required certifications before moving fully into the Divemaster portion of the program.

If you have no dive certifications at all, that is still okay. You can begin through the longest entry route as long as you are comfortable in the water. In other words, the Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali pathway is built to meet candidates where they are, while still making sure everyone reaches a strong professional standard by the end.

What makes Project Laut’s Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali worth the investment?

Project Laut’s Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali is worth the investment because it is not just a certification product. It is a longer, more deliberate training pathway designed to produce stronger divers, better future instructors, and more capable ocean professionals.

Candidates are investing in small groups, close mentorship, higher standards, deeper academics, real conservation participation, and a much stronger overall development process than they would get in a faster or more minimal internship model. The extra time, attention, and structure are there for a reason: they help candidates leave better prepared, more confident, and more employable.

In practical terms, an investment in the Conservation Divemaster Course in Bali program is an investment in yourself. It is designed to create real value in your diving ability, your ecological understanding, and your long-term professional foundation.
